ASTRONAUT PEDRO DUQUE ANSWERS QUESTIONS OF SCHOOLCHILDREN FROM SPACE

Thursday 23 October 2003, an audience of 75 children, 25 parents, the City Mayor Manual Cabezas, and the head representatives of the education council, as well as the head of the local telecommunications authority Xose Lois, gathered in the Colegio Ceip Seixalvo, Ourense, Spain. An ARISS School Contact was scheduled with ESA astronaut Pedro Duque presently performing a scientific mission on board the International Space Station, the “Cervantes” mission.

At 15:31 local time, Fernando EB1IIT-EC1AME started calling NA1SS. A minute later Pedro, ED4ISS operating NA1SS, came on the air loud and clear.

Pedro answered in Spanish the questions of 16 schoolchildren. The signals from space were perfect till the ISS went over the horizon 10 minutes later.

All nationwide radio and TV broadcasters and newspapers were present. The QSO was included in all the most seen nationwide TV and radio newscasts, including rush hour news from TELE 5, ANTENA 3, TVE, TVG and 3 local TV networks. The event was covered by more than 40 radio, TV and press spots and more special space programmes are expected in the next days.

Miguel Magallanes, director of the NASA website in Spanish, also paid a visit.

Congratulations to the operators of the ground station:

EA1BAF, JUAN (computers)

EB1DGH, JOSE (tracking and doppler)

EB1IIT-EC1AME, FERNANDO (QSO operator).

A great day for the children, a primer for ARISS and a wonderful event for all the Spanish “radioaficionados”.
