ARISS SCHOOL CONTACT PLANNED WITH SCHOOL IN LUCCA, ITALY

An ARISS School Contact is planned for Istituto Comprensivo Marco Polo-Viani and Scuola Secondaria 1° Grado, Viareggio, Lucca, Italy.

The direct radio contact is scheduled on Wednesday January 12 at 10:55 UTC, which is 11.55 CEWT.

The Marco Polo-Viani school is located in the northern center of Viareggio, in a large building near the sea and the pine woods. There are 338 students, aged 11 to 14, in 14 classes with 43 teachers and a principal. The school offers an experimental curriculum, basic tuition being completed by other activities such as theater, art, music, foreign languages (Spanish, English, French, German), among which the students can choose. The educational activities are supported by well equiped specialized laboratories.

The Istituto Suore Mantellate di Viareggio has been founded in 1800. The Institute became exclusively educational in 1913 and comprises different levels: kindergarten, primary and girls school. In 1946, a secundary level was added. In 1987, a 5 year curriculum offered psycho-pedagogy and biology studies, presently called Communications Lyceum. The Institute thus offers primary through secundary education to students aged 6 to18 years.

The ARISS contact will be conducted in Italian with astronaut Paolo Nespoli – IZØJPA.

The downlink signals will be audible in Europe on 145.800 MHz FM.

The event will be webcast on http://www.versiliawebtv.it/streaming/reteversilia.html

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers onboard the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology and learning.
